Fantasy Football 2021 Busts: D'Andre Swift among top five players to avoid despite preseason buzz
What do Zach Ertz, Mark Ingram, Marlon Mack and Austin Hooper have in common? SportsLine identified all of them as potential busts candidates before the 2020 season, and all four players finished significantly lower than where they were drafted. Avoiding them may have been the difference in winning your Fantasy title or going home with nothing. Â
Pinpointing overvalued players is a key to Fantasy football success, and while this year's busts are more players who are expected to shine with increased roles or because of their talent levels or past production, there are strong indicators that they will fall flat and should be avoided despite some reasons to believe these players will meet higher expectations.
Before you draft this season, you'll want to see who SportsLine's Scott Engel is citing as the biggest Fantasy Football busts for 2021. Engel is an inaugural member of the Fantasy Sports Writers Association's Hall of Fame and has been a premier analyst and Fantasy personality for 25 years. He is a four-time FSWA Award Winner and 10-time nominee. In 2020, Scott was a finalist for the FSWA Fantasy Football Writer of the Year Award, which he also won previously.Â
In addition to being the Fantasy writer for the Seattle Seahawks' official site since 2012, Engel has appeared on The Athletic, SiriusXM FantasySports Radio, ESPN.com, NFL.com, the Associated Press, Yahoo Sports, SI.com, the New York Post, USA Today, RotoBaller, and of course, CBSSports.com.Â
For 2021, we can tell you that Engel is not high on Lions running back D'Andre Swift, who is going off the board as the RB14 on average in 2021 drafts after scoring 10 times last season. Even though Swift is a darling across the Fantasy Football industry this season, Engel suggests that you proceed with caution as he may let down those who draft him early in a big way.Â
"The problem for Swift and the Lions, and for anyone who will be drafting him in the late first round or early part of the second, is that every defensive coordinator and linebacker who runs the defense on the field knows Swift is going to be a huge part of the offensive game plan," Engel says. "Detroit is simply going to be easy to defend this season. If the defense stops or contains Swift, they will shut down the engine of the Lions offense, and it will sputter and die."
